Doors of Newtown and Erskineville

from A$75.00

This collage is the result of an attempt to capture the vibe of Sydney’s Inner West suburbs Newtown and Erskineville. I spent an afternoon walking through the streets of these two suburbs taking pictures of a variety of colourful doors. I expected to find the occasional red door but by the end of the day, I was amazed how many different colours I actually came across.

Shooting the images was one thing; assembling them in a way that’s pleasing to the eye was quite another: I grouped the doors into colours and counted the total of each; then I drew up a grid and placed the striking red doors first as a sort of skeleton on which to hang it all. Slowly, I filled the grid, taking care not to place any two similarly hued doors beside each other, until at last he was satisfied with the impressionistic quality of the montage and the subtle layers of symmetry running through it. (a video of this process can be found here)
